Look for a GST Number and NZBN 

Legitimate NZ businesses generally have a GST number and a New Zealand Business Number (NZBN). You can verify an NZBN at nzbn.govt.nz. These checks give you confidence that you’re dealing with an established, tax-registered entity rather than an unaccountable operator. 

Read Reviews on Trusted Platforms 

Look for reviews on Tradynz.com, Google, and Facebook. Pay attention to substance rather than just star ratings. Genuine reviews mention specific details — the tradesperson’s name, the nature of the job, the timeline of a project. Be cautious of profiles with only glowing five-star reviews and no critical ones whatsoever. 

Check Trade Association Memberships 

Many reputable NZ tradespeople belong to industry bodies such as Master Builders, the Electrical Workers Registration Board, the Plumbers Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board, or the Real Estate Authority. Membership often means the professional meets ongoing competency and ethical standards. 

Know Your Rights Under NZ Consumer Law 

The Consumer Guarantees Act provides strong protections when things go wrong — goods must be of acceptable quality, services must be carried out with reasonable care and skill.
